My parents live two hours by car from my home. My grandfather and
uncle, both veterans, are buried near them. I left here at 10
minutes before 1, arrived at the cemetery where my grandfather was
laid to rest in November, 2003 and played Taps for him, and a crowd
of about 40 people who had come to the cemetery to pay respects to a
lost loved one. The veterans graves were all marked with flags.
Then, I drove 10 minutes to a second cemetery, picking my 75 year old
aunt up on the way, and played Taps for my departed uncle we laid to
rest some 12 years ago. When we laid him to rest, I was out of the
country and unable to attend the funeral. No one played a real horn
at his funeral, so I played today for him to make up for it. My aunt
moves into a retirement community four hours away next week, and she
is lamenting leaving her husband behind. I feel for her, but her
kids made the decisions, not me.
It was a worthwhile day, and I did something to honor those who
fought for me before I was even considered.
Just thought I'd share...
Al
