Yesterday I received the flugelhorn mouthpiece I had ordered from www.loudmouthpieces.com
It was designed by Nashville Studio musician Steve Patrick in conjunction with Joe Murphy of LM.
Steve had emailed me several months ago about a flugelhorn mpc. he was developing.
When it was going into production he said that the test mouthpieces had gotten great reviews from other studio guys. So, I was intrigued and ordered one. My goals with the new mouthpiece were simple - a comfortable mouthpiece with a great sound. I play a Kanstul 925 with a.415 bore. I believe it is based on the Besson Brevette flugelhorn. The only thing that bothered me about the flugelhorn was that after playing my B flat trumpet it felt that it was backing up on me. So, I would back off and sometimes not give enough support on some notes.
When I started playing my flugel with the new mpc I noticed I was getting a great sound. However, it suddenly dawned on me why other players have loved it. The cup and backbore are so balanced that the horn does not feel tight at all. My articulation on the flugelhorn improved dramatically as did my intonation. It was easy to find the center of the pitch. I am able to technically do more things on the flugelhorn then I ever thought possible. The mouthpiece makes the horn so easy to play.
I give Steve a two thumbs up for the mouthpiece. Now, I am considering trying their trumpet mouthpieces.
Mike
