Subject: [TPIN] A WONDERFUL musical experience

I must tell you all, that I ordered the "Making of West Side Story" DVD
because just the snippet that we saw of Wilmer and the other fine trumpet
players on that session really intrigued me.
Watching this video was one of the most rewarding musical experiences I
have had in a long time. Not only is the playing phenomenal by ALL the
musicians, but the vocalists are simply amazing. To see this done live in
a recording
studio at this high a level of performance is mind boggling. Also, I was
mesmerized watching Leonard Bernstein. His conducting was superb and his
range of emotions during this piece can drain you, just watching it.
The other thing is that even at this level of studio playing, wait until
you hear some of the "take" numbers for these tunes................. Some
over a hundred on the same tune. Of course those are not all the way
through the
tune, but it is amazing to see how many times they did certain things.
(And
then they had to do all the inter-cuts and splicing to put the whole thing
together.)
I HIGHLY recommend this DVD! And again - congratulations to Wilmer Wise
and his brass section for remarkable playing. Wilmer - was Joel Kaye on
Bass Saxophone?
