Ellis makes excellent points here. Horns won't guarantee anything
Mouthpieces won't either
MATCHING
I. Sound
II. Articulation
III. volume
IV. Style
V. Spirit of music making
There is something pleasing about MATCHING
There is something inherently pleasing about UNIQUENESS as well
When two tpts play TOGETHER in harmony, I like to hear them MATCH more.
When two tpts ANSWER or play OPPOSITE each other, I (often)like to hear more of their uniqueness and contrast.
In BOTH circumstances, V. Spirit of music making is the most important.
I think we have lost some of our personality in our quest to be perfect in today's world. I love to hear personality in a player's playing even if it is subtle. Trying to be somebody else keeps us from being all that we have the talent to be.
