Well, I guess I have to chime in here.  I would NEVER ask a student to  play 
a low brass instrument.  I have seen too many times where a high  school 
teacher asks a trumpet player to play baritone because there are more  than enough 
trumpets.   I have seen it completely mess up that  student's trumpet 
embouchure, AND --
then that student is never thought of as a "serious" trumpet player again,  
by the teacher.
Yes, there are some people who can play low brass and upper brass and do it  
very successfully, but more often than not, from what I have seen, it doesn't  
help and can even hurt.  I know it messes me up completely.
