For years I did without the thumb saddle since horns then didn't have them.
To me with my newer horns, they're obstacles that get in the way. If
anything, I'd sooner pay a good techie to remove them. Burn me at the stake,
but I never used valve slides or the 3rd valve trigger on my Olds Recording
horn to tune and 'lipped it' instead. While I'd more than likely get bounced
by a good teacher for my transgression, it works well for me as it has for
many years prior. I'm sure that I'll get my butt flamed for not being gung
ho legit, but you can't teach this dog new tricks. 8-)
