A lot of chat software works exactly the way you've described.
Why not Java? You rule out some good options by avoiding Java.
ParaChat is a very good product: http://www.parachat.com/server/

Subject: [TPIN] ATTN: Linux Gurus
I have an idea to move the TPIN chatroom to a server of my own design, and
I'm thinking that Linux might be a good way to go. If there are any Linux
gurus out there could you contact me please?
It's just the result of an ongoing effort to try to make the TPIN
chatroom more accessible. Ideally, I'd like to have something where the
user simply enters a URL into a web browser and then logs into the chatroom.
I don't know if that's possible, but it seems that it would be given the
amount of software that's available. There's GOT to be something out there
that would fit this order.
Also, I'm searching for something that's not Java-based. Any
help would be greatly appreciated!
Mike
