Ken Larson's C conversion is very close to that of a Malone Bach of olden
days. :-)
You get a Larson leadpipe - he has 3-4 models. They are reverse pipes with
the outer sleeve cover like Malone's and those he puts on the Yamaha
Chicago. Ken rebuilds the tuning crook to fit the reverse pipe and to offset
the length of whichever leadpipe you choose. He puts on new bell braces that
are thicker and wider - more like the Mt. Vernon Bach, but I believe even
thicker than those. He buffs the bell down so that it is lighter. He
rebuilds the ferrule at the stem of the bell so that it is a long pipe
ferrule that matches and parallels the lower slide on the first valve slide.
The brace between those two is movable as is the brace between the slide
that goes into the third valve and the bottom third valve slide. These two
movable braces enable you to tweak certain notes and responses. He goes
through internally and makes sure there are no solder globs or other
obstructions, he does a precision valve alignment and makes sure the horn is
assembled with no stress.
There are other secret things he does that I don't know about.. Perhaps
annealing, I'm not sure.
These horns play great.. I highly recommend them if you want the bach sound
but also want a horn that is in tune and plays well.
