Interesting.  Why do you think the idea didn't take off?  The thing I wonder
about is how different the blow would be when using the valves (vs. open) -
given all the "wrapping" inside the valves.  But I wonder. 

Also, the valve casings themselves must be thicker/heavier, making the horn
feel "clunky" to hold (?)

Innovative design, to be certain...
