I agree. I remember all the young putdowns of Al Hirt (Pete Fountain,
too). It's good to get back to Jumbo without guilt. Who else could
play all night long, with joyful abandon, and not make any mistakes?
Quentin Tarantino brought him back for me when he put the Green Hornet
in Kill Bill. I also remember seeing him, late, on the Carson show.
Don't recall what he played, but he was wearing a black, flat topped
Spanish hat and seemed disconnected from the audience, playing his ass
off. He ended with a great big, brash pedal tone that I took to mean,
"In your face." Unforgettable. I like hearing that he's one of Vax's
favorite cats.
