Oh man... I dig his playing. It's "different" and the sound certainly
isn't what you would call "round" - but I guess its for just those
reasons that I get a kick out of listening to him play. I would have
a hard time living with that kind of sound coming from myself - but I
still enjoy listening to him play that way precisely because its so
edgy - kind of exciting, really.
I get a little bumbed out with how "homoginized" everything has
become. Used to be much bigger differences in playing style from
country to country, city to city, town to town than there are now - or
at least that's my perception.
I once heard the moscow state radio orchestra play bolero and the
firebird on a program at the theater I played at in south america
years ago. The trumpet players sounded like they stepped ouit of
woody hermans band - and they played with a vibrato rivaled only by
harry james... But MAN did they play! No hesitation, no holding back
- just b ig beatiful, open "devil may care but I'm gonna make some
MUSIC tonight" kind of playing. One of the best (most gratifying)
performances I've ever had the pleasure to witness.
Thank God the whole world doesn't try to only play "round" and "dark"...
.."Viva La Difference"
(Or whatever....)
