I just got a new CD on Mama records (distributed by Summit Records) and
wanted to let TPIN know about it.
Until now, I haven't been a huge fan of Mr. Saunder's playing. Of COURSE I
realized from the moment I first heard him that he was a stellar improvisor.
I have always appreciated his work from an intellectual perspective, but not
on an emotional level. Great stuff, but it didn't "send me" like other stuff
does. I've heard him several times live and on recordings and it is always
the same thing. Great stuff, but not my favorite.
His new album - The Carl Saunders Exploration - The Lost Bill Holman Charts
changed all that.
I just LOVE this record! Love the charts, love the playing, love the
production. Mr. Saunders is just KILLING it on this record. I just grin from
ear to ear through this whole album.. It has a great variety of styles,
swings like crazy and kept me grinning through all 11 tracks.
The band is amazing - Carl on trpt/flugal (amazing flugal playing), Pete
Christlieb on tenor, Andy Martin on trombone, Bob Efford on Bari Sax (great
sound,) Christian Jacob on piano, Kevin Axt on Bass and Santo Savino on
drums.
If you are a jazz lover get this CD. You won't regret it.
