Playing efficiently, is not something you just decide to do! It takes a lot
of time and effort with consistent practice. I compare it to my jogging,
Several years ago, I started jogging. I struggled to go a half a mile! I was breath
ing hard and felt like I was at least 85!! After years of regular jogging I
am much more efficient, as I have more muscle tone and lung capacity and my
body is working efficiently, at least for the two to three miles I have been
consistently running. The same is true for playing the trumpet. Playing the
horn and working up to longer playing times, being consistent as possible,
working on breath control. long tones, lip slurs and range, will bring results
over time! Another important step is to bring some accountability to the
process, Find a group to play with on a regular basis. Brass group, Community band,
Church orchestra are some possiblilites. This will help in many
ways........... Keep your interest up, give motivation, give another forum to encourage
your progress, expose you to a variety of music, give you something to work on
and for each week, a good way to keep check on your progress, and have
something to look forward to!!
Because of your schedule, it may be a slow process, so be patient and keep
the horn on your face as much as possible!!
Hang in there and keep honkin!!

Frank brought up an interesting topic for discussion. Musicians who
consider themselves as highly efficient trumpet players are those who have found the
most optimized set-up, one that works well, allowing a desired level of
minimal effort while playing. Playing with minimal effort is always a good thing
since it allows our creative side to open up easier. A Clarke study is more
fun while driving down a smooth vs. bumpy road, for example.
