May I suggest that you don't wait too long to start playing with others. 
Thanks to Bob Odneal, one of the really fine pro players on this list, I 
started playing with others long before i thought I was ready. Bob 
almost insisted that i join his student big band. Not because I was good 
enough to make the band better, but because he knew how valuable to me 
playing with others would be.

thanks to Bob, I have now had an opportunity over the last few years to 
do a fair amount of playing in his big band, and in a few small combos, 
and now am in a combo that I am having an incredibly good time in
