Someone a few days ago mentioned they were trying to find a happy medium
between a 3C and a 13A4A I believe. It seems to me there's a world of difference
between the two. On my own great mouthpiece search (mainly on Schilkes, due
to J.Donaldson's advice -good quality, consistent, and reasonably priced) co
ncluded with a satisfying settling-on of a 12B4.
I tried a bunch from a 9C4 to a 15C4. I could NOT believe the difference
between a 14A4A (which I like) and the little golf-tee-with-a-hole 13A4A. (I'll
expect a few smart-a answers here:), but is it me and/or my embouchure, or
does anyone else find the 13A4A almost unplayable? I can only imagine what a
6A4 is like. (And yes, I do like the feel of the Schilke 4 rim, in case you
noticed.)

Well, lets see, Steve. For many years, the 13A4a was Schilke's best selling
mouthpiece. I made a lot of recordings on that mouthpiece, as did John
Harner and any other number of lead players. It was also a favorite mouthpiece
to "customize" and there are many other off shoot mouthpieces out there to
this day.
I still play a mouthpiece that comes from that original design, but Joe
Marcinkiewicz has made a few alterations over the past few years. And guess
what? The mouthpiece that I play on now is a little bit smaller than the 13A4a
was. Sorry, but you and the others who seem to need to put down that
mouthpiece (and other smaller pieces) may not be able to play on it, but according to
the numbers that Schilke had sold back when I was still with them, between
1971 and 1991, they sold at least 20,000 of them. I guess somebody must be
able to use it.
Will this ever end?
