You could try having him tongue through the teeth off the lip, as many methods are endorsing this now.  (Balanced Embouchure (top lip,) Bobby Shew (top lip,) Jeanne Pocius (bottom lip,) Jerome Callet (bottom lip,) etc.)  Although many people are vehemently against this sort of thought, there's no doubt in my mind that it can help secure attacks and get the spitting effect that the old cornet soloists talked about.
