Top 20 greatest eh? Well, my idea of the greatest is probably a bit
different from everyone else. Here goes,.....

1. Waly Blanton- Principal trumpeter with the Las Vegas Symphony started me
on trumpet. He taught me everything from the begininng. Fingerings, how to
read notation, scales, etc. He also had the sense to kick me out when I got
too lazy to learn.
2. John Harner who taught me wind and power. He showed me what being a
cast iron player was all about.
3. Tommy Porrello who taught me what to do with wind and power. He showed
me there's more to life then double c's. He was a stickly for transposition
and playing pretty.
4. Dave Culp. You probably haven't heard of him but check some old Elvis
bands. The man was simply amazing. Incredible lead player as well as one
of the best jazz players ever. He did this all with false teeth. He asaved
my life more then once when I was a teenager and spent many nights till 5am
talking to this silly kid who only wanted to know what mouthpiece he used.
5. Mike Paulson- awesome lead player from Vegas who would belt out an F over
double C on top of playing the whole lead book for the Lido show. He'd then
procede to the union to lay it all out there again night after night.
6. Chris Walker who as a baby faced looking guy had a HUGE sound and was
smart enough to leave Vegas years ago to join the Naval Academy band. I
believe he's still there.
7. Loren "Doc" Little who showed me you can be an eye surgeon as well as a
top notch bebop player.
8. Tom Eylin (sp?) Who in my opinion showed why anyone would want to play a
plastic mouthpiece.
9. Greg Marciel- Man what a consant in Vegas growing up.
10. Walt Johnson- After 2 weeks of me and my buddy wandering around the
nugget parking lot we found him. He gave us a cassette which later came to
be the trunmpet scrolls. I had that music 15 years before it was released
and in my opinion, the first pass (my tape) was much better.
11. Conte Candoli who never complained about the kids hangin out at the
4-queens.
12 Carl Saunders who made sure we kids knew we were out of our league.
13 Mike Vax who actually has enough heart to share his experiences and
trumpet joy with anyone who will listen (a trumpeter with heart? what's
that?)....:)
14 Bill Chase who was more interested in who you were then what he was.
15 Alan Ware who believe it or not was one of the more "stable" members of
Chase. Spent many days and nights at my house telling me what the adult
party was all about. (shivers)
16 Larry Veo who in his Dom Deloiss was more excited about trumpet then any
teenager I knew at the time.
17 Ron Barrows who taught me there's more to life then 1-3-5.
18 Danny Falcone who as a friend and competition grwoing up was always a
wonderful gage to our madness.
19 Rich Little who was usually a part of stretching that gage as young
trumpeters growing up toether.
20 Myself to me cause if I'm shooting for that, I'm not aiming high
enough......:)

Whew that was long.......:)
