No, they are not fast to clip on and you risk damage. I can't asnwer your question on in-bell mutes, but I've just refurbished my 40 year old Humes & Berg one, and I used a 2" piece of heatshrink tubing on each metal clip to protect the bell. Not that I use it often though because it doesn't seem to mute enough or have a pleasing sound - I don't think the wadding inside is original. I might need to find something better to stuff it with.
