Just dropping a note to the list about Brian Lynch's date at the Iridium in
NYC last night. This is a "must hear/must see", both from a jazz/music
perspective, as well as for the trumpet playing "wow factor".
I had heard recordings of Brian Lynch before, but hearing him live is a
thrill. Tremendous musical energy and fire in his playing, along with
beautiful and sophisticated melodic ideas. Everything thing he does is
both technically stunning and musically subtle at the same time - One tune
he did "Theme for Maricia", really stood out for me. Amazing contrast and
range in sound and musical ideas. Plus... this guy has amazing "chops".
Big, full sound, broad spectrum of color from brilliant "sizzle" to dark,
"flugely" tones over three octaves in practically every tune he played. I
kept waiting for him to wind it down, and give his chops a rest... but he
kept up the energy for the entire set, with another to follow.
(For the curious: Brian was playing a Yamaha Xeno, with a Monette
mouthpiece (don't know the size, but interestingly - it did look fairly
large, from where I was seated, about 4 or 5 feat away).
The rest of the group is a perfect compliment - obviously, Eddie Palmieri is
a monstrous pianist. Full of technical energy, rythym and deep harmonic
"color" in everything he does. The bassist, Boris Kaslav, a native of
Moscow Russia, is astounding - and another "must hear/must see" for
everyone. Keep an eye on this guys schedule - some of the most amazing
latin/jazz bass solos are coming from a guy born in Moscow! Very cool.
And he "nails" each and every notes pitch, sound and timbre - nomatter how
fast he's moving. Something tells me he would be equally amazing playing
Tchaikosvky, Beethovan or Mahler. The drummer, a young kid named Dafnis
Prieto was musically mesmerizing. I'm not one for extended drum solos, but
I could have listened to this kid all night.
If you get a half a chance - beg, borrow or steal to get the time and money
to hear these guys. You won't be disappointed.
