Overlooking players that produce really crass sounds - strings and woodwinds who complain about good brass players volume often have a mindset like they're part of a quartet or a trio - performaing for an audience sitting 5 feet away. Conductors who do the same are often inexperienced and/or naive. Unfortunately for brass players (especially trumpet players) in back of a large symphoney orchestra, it'll never sound "right" 20 or 30 feet away, off the stage, if you're sucking on the horn during the big brass blows in Tchaikosvky, Strauss, Mahler.... Plus, it'll screw up your chops. To heck with 'em... let it "flow" ;-)

On lead trumpet, you'll be busting a gut to play the part as quietly as you can, deploying the Crown Royal bag, and the director will still be shrieking that you're too loud...
