I don't know Hession and would not buy his book, but the old cliche applies when criticizing golden idols, Hession or anyone else:  When my index finger is pointing at somebody and accusing them of something, the other three are pointing back at me.  If all of us can heed and remember that, it will affect how we behave towards each other.
