You know, ALL of us who teach do a fair amount of charity work...
Until recently I gave away a free first lesson (even if that *first lesson* lasted a couple of days) to TPIN members who came out to see me....
Now, I'm no longer able to be so generous, but I still try to have a sliding scale, offering less expensive (and yes, sometimes free) lessons to kids in school and other needy folks....
But for those who are able to pay, I charge a standard fee of $60/hour, or $150/3 hour comprehensive CHOPCHECKUPtm. If folks want to share a session, I'll work out a split of the cost for them...
I also offer phone lessons...If folks offer to pay, I usually ask them to find a used instrument and ship it to me to be used for needy kids in the school system....
Fwiw, I've generally found most folks to be considerate. (I have also had middle-of-the-night phone calls from one of the better known elder trumpeters about chops issues....)
I've also done my best to help needy folks obtain good instruments when necessary (at no cost to them).
I figure I'm saving up for that big brass band in the sky ;^)
I know I'm not going to live forever, but hopefully the spirit I try to pass on to my students WILL.
Something to think about,
Blessings,
Jeanne
