Ben,
In the 90's I was managing a small music strore in the Chicago area and teaching lessons when an LA Sax Rep. came in to try to get me to put his line in our inventory. When I told him it was possible, but I would have to discuss it with the owner, he invited me to the factory to observe their operation. When I arrived, he had a string of unfinished Flugal's waiting for me to try out. He said pick one you like and a color and he would provide me one for my personal use. What the hell, I chose a black w/ red speckles that showed up under a bright light and they gave it to me with my name engraved on the bell.
The horn is done in automotive enamel, but I figured it would probably make the horn sound darker and why not it's a flugal Horn. This company does not manufacture, rather they import horns from Asia (Taiwan I think). They weren't sure where this one came from.
Anyway, The valves sucked so I took it to Wayne Tanabe and he fixed them up fine. To this day I play it because the sound is better than my Yamaha and everybody comments on it's
appearance.
My point is, I have no concerns about inexpensive construction or it being a pro horn. If it falls apart so what, it plays great ! It has a spring loaded trigger for the 3rd valve, it never gives me problems, and the price was right. The only questions I get from others is "Why does it say in Gold lettering "L.A. SAX alongside my name? That's a Flugal"
If your horn plays as you say, I would say it is a great Find.
Regards,
Bob Zack

TPIN,
anyone on this listserv familiar with this type
of trumpet, especially its possible origin? I've heard
that it's either from a Chinese or Taiwanese
manufacturer.
Though it plays extremely well, has excellent
slotting, and produces a condensed yet
lively sound, the seemingly inexpensive
construction of this instrument concerns me
a bit.
Should I simply chalk up this one as a
great student/practice horn?
Are there any pro players out there
who use practice horns on a regular basis
to help give the main ax a rest?
Or,does this horn simply need to present
itself on eBay as a great find in Acapulco?
