Bob,
I think half the fun when trying out new
horns in a music store is to see just how
the valves respond regardless of what
state they're in at the time. Valves tend
to warm up a little bit as the saliva starts
to mix with the warm air into the
horn, making it a little looser when
checking the piston response.
Trying out a new horn is like meeting
a new person for the first time. There's
usually a temporary period in which a
comfortable fit begins to occur.
I find that using Hetman's Light Piston
Lubricant #1 does the trick for any
new horn. Boy you should feel these
Chinese valves now! They bounce
right back up at you within the blink
of an eye.
I once had my grandfather's trumpet
restored by Wayne Tanabe and he
did an excellent job in restoring all three
valves, so I know what you're saying
regarding your horn's playability.
I'm going to see how it goes with
this Alde Audio trumpet for a
while, treating it like my primary
horn. I've already heard mixed
comments from my colleagues
on the bandstand.
The trombone player, who sits
next to me, has already commented
how much 'darker' it sounds which
was a good thing from his perspective.
The tenor player, who sits directly
behind me, has commented that the
projection is no where near my
primary horn. She's on a vintage
Mark tenor!
The alto player is still undecided, though
I can tell you that from my ears it
seems as if I am blending well together.
I have noticed this during a recent
performance of the 2 O'Clock Jump.
I should also write that my student-like
horn may be blending better since both
the alto sax and the trombone player
are both using a student/intermediate horn.
Has anyone ever thought about
keeping a student/intermediate horn
in the bag for the sake of blending
better within a student horn section?
I know, I know, the Super Bowl's
on, so we can continue this thread
later.
