I worked with Curtis graduate who also played pretty good jazz - he would
sometimes stick his tonque *between* his lips when making attacks in the low
register on jazz solos, specifically to get that dirty "thwack" kind of
sound. Very effective. (I use this technique when I get a chance, too).

What a lot of purely "legit" players don't often realize is that when jazz
players hear a trumpet player doing things too perfectly (in terms of
attacks, etc...) they can interpret it as being "wrong". And not only for
trumpet players...

I once heard some really good jazz players discussing a flute players
performance a theatre gig - really beautiful player - gorgeous sound,
incredible technique, etc.... One of the comments was "good player... but
she had that 'legit' sound... but still good...". I always remembered that
comment.
