Ha! The 2 coolest things about that evening were (as I recall now):
1) the effect it had on the rest of our orchestra - the string players
stopped complaining about the stage accoustics for a while and ...
2) the brass players from the Soviet orchestra went drinking with the brass
players from our orchestra after the concert. You know what? All they
wanted to talk about was American jazz and lead players!
(I think that last paragraph serves as trumpet/brass related content...
Ahem...)
They did Bolero that evening - when they were done, the 1st trombone player
put a red rose in his mouth and did a dance on stage - these cats were
loose, baby!

Great story Dave. the greatest orchestra performance I've ever heard was by
the Krakow Sympony Orchestra from Poland. Their hall burned down. They
lost their hall and their entire music library. Their american conductor
took them to the states on tour to cities with large Polish populations like
Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee......... They stayed with Polish families.
They didn' tmake much as musicians and the string players played on second
rate instruments but when it came time to play, they played with a passion
that I have NEVER EVER heard from another orchestra.
