Actually... Really *good* rock bands do indeed control volume on stage.  

Plus, there's an element at play in that genre that symphony orchestra brass
sections never have to deal with:  The SOUND crew.  {{{shudder}}} You're at
their mercy.  When it's done right, it's nirvana.  When it's wrong.... It's
like blowing your horn into a pillow.  (I've taken to bribing them with
sandwiches and booze).

It's all relative,... But fundamentially, it's the same issue:  What's
required to *convey* musical *energy*, at approporiate levels.   Mahler and
Straus are cool when they "sizzle" a little bit too. <g>

Of course,... If you gotta *think* about it too much, it's over. ;-)
