[TPIN] bass trumpet

Last night at the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra concert here in
Albuquerque, one of the trombone players played a bass trumpet.

Piece was written for a valve trombone by one of Ellington's trombone
players. The bass trumpet sounded much more like a trumpet that it did
a trombone - brighter, more focused, etc. I checked out bass trumpet on
Wikipedia and didn't come up with much. Said, "The bass trumpet differs
from a valve trombone" - or words to that effect.

So, what's the difference?
