They definitely help my routine, when done carefully and correctly (don't
confuse "carefully and correctly" with "timid", of course...)
Claude Gordon wrote that pedals tend to insure things are working correctly.
He advocates incorporating them into the warm-up, in his "Systematic
Approach".

I use pedal C to see how large of an aperture I can create without
displacing the mouthpiece with a lot of jaw dropping. In other words, I
play the note with as much of both lips in the mouthpiece as I possibly can
manage.
This requires maximum flexibility from the tissue inside the mouthpiece.
This in turn allows me to play the entire range of the trumpet with more lip
in the mouthpiece, which allows for more cushion, more strength, better
tone, more dynamics, everything is easier and better. And yes, better
range.
