Hello List,
Some of you may may be interested in the set-up I use with a plunger mute:
First, you need to purchase a common garden variety, plastic, B-flat
Kazoo! Then, wrap a length of rubber electrician's tape around the
center, or widest section of the kazoo, so that it won't mar the bell of
your trumpet. But make certain you don't cover/impede the vibrating
diphragm!
Now insert the kazoo firmly into the bell, large end first. Several
things will become evident as you play
:
1. You will probably need to push your tuning slide all the way in.
2. You will be able to "bend" tones like never before
3. If you play softly into the mic, you'll get this wonderful, rasping,
buzz in your tone.
4. Now, add your favorite Bb plunger.....I like the smaller sink plunger
(makes it easier to get high notes) ( : >) ,,,,,,,,,and you'll take
"Do Nuthin' Til You Hear From Me" (also earlier known as "Concerto
for Cootie") to new heights!!
5. Be prepared for a whole new thread of conversation (with the
audience) at you next club date.
Also, for a neat variation on this mute, cut the correct size hole in
the bottom end of an old straight mute, insert a Bb kazoo and epoxy it
in place....no leaks. Creates a wonderful soumd, especially when played
into the mic. But obviously, you can't use your plunger with it.
Have Fun!
