I had a chance to try an older Bach picc at a local music store last night. It
was a used instrument and a strange one indeed.

It looked like a piccolo herald trumpet with the bell going straight out with no
turns. There was a ring on the first valve slide, but the total adjustable
length was about 1/4 inch. The third slide had more range but it had a lot of
play. It had a cornet shank and three valves.

The sound was pretty good, but the intonation was atrocious. Without the fourth
valve, there wasn't a lot of alternate fingerings available. I could get most of
the notes in tune, but A and B natural were unusably flat.

It's a cute instrument but not good for much else than a wall ornament.

Does anybody have any experience with this picc?

Dave
