The highest notes he played are generally playable by most 
high school trumpet players these days, yet those young 
players would never be going there were it not for Louis. 
We shake and growl, double-tongue improvised licks, accent 
and phrase like Louis -- all perhaps better than he did. 
We do so because he already blazed the trail and did it 
all for us long before we got there. All we had to do then 
was to follow and do it over ......

I appreciate the basic idea of your post, but the above 
statement isn't even close to accurate.  Noone plays or 
phrases as well as Louis did, even a simple jazz quarter 
note!  And as far as range, listen to "Swing That Music". 
 You overstated your case.  I do agree with you that 
taking pot shots at the folks who literally define our 
music is absurd, and tends to say much more about the 
critic than the criticized.  And what recordings of Louis 
double tonguing are you talking about?
