I just got the TrumCor metal straight and the TrumCor lyric straight. Both
are great mutes, but the metal straight mute is unbelievably incredible.
Playing with it feels so open that I wouldn't notice it in the bell were it
not for the weight and sound. The first few times I used it I noticed
myself working too hard and overshooting a lot of things because I was so
used to working against the resistance of my old Alessi-Vacchiano. For cup
mutes, I agree that the Denis Wick is wonderful for getting different
colors, but there's no substitute for the Stonelined cup if you want "that
sound," especially for big band tunes.
