I have the Shorty Rogers and the Chet Baker Proper box sets and they're
pretty good. There's a tempest in a teapot brewing in some of the audiophile
forums that many of the JSP, Definitive Proper and Absolute Distribution
packages may have used Mosaic CD's for their sources and actually don't have anymore
remastering costs other than a cheap EQ job. (They also tend not to have
alternate takes because those are more of a "smoking gun" in terms of being
able to backtrack access to the masters.....)
They don't sound quite as good as the Mosaic sets (The notes while good
,aren't quite as "uptown" as their Mosaic counterparts, but they are pretty good
actually) to my ear but there not "bad". They also do not always reproduce
the same discographies. (The Rogers set includes his recordings with Andre
Previn but excludes the British release and Pacific Jazz rareties found on the
Mosaic set.) The Mosaic sets are more exhaustive and tend to get more (but
not all) of those elusive rarities. For example The Yesterdays/Indiscreet
and Her Face/Blue-Bird Land singles don't appear even on the Mosaic Ferguson
set. All that being said, with The Basie Studio Roulette set selling two weeks
ago for nearly 1700.00 and the Rogers set hanging at $250.00, The sound
quality doesn't have to be indistinguishable to make them attractive. I've got
the JSP Louis set on order but it hasn't arrived yet.
I'll let you know how it sounds when I receive it.
Hope this helps....

Has anyone purchased these low-priced 4 cd sets? Looking at their catolog
I'm finding several of interest (Louis, Bix, Shorty Rogers, Monk, Bird,
Oscar
Peterson, etc), but I'm unfamiliar with them. Are they poor quality
recordings, hence the low price?
