Yes you need one on one with a comptent teacher, but if that rule were 
always followed the amount of traffic on this DISCUSSION list would decrease 
dramatically.

In the end if he wants n easy sounding, clean, brighter sound he will use a 
smaller mouthoiece.

I agree that  different backbore is a maybe the best way to do it but it 
seemed from his post that he wanted to keep the cost down.
