[TPIN] What IS competent?

It easier to identify incompetence than competence
with regard to trumpet instruction.
My most memorable example of incompetence was
getting a private student who had been playing
for 2 years a school, she had a real fuzzy
airy sound. That's what happens when you try
to use a cornet mouthpiece in a trumpet.
I was the first to notice the problem.
As far as competence; can the teacher play?, if not
could he/she play? Does he/she have any successful students?
Ultimately we have to become our own teachers, but
that is a lot tougher when you are hobbled by
incorrect information.
