[TPIN] What IS competent?

I totally agree...Mouthpieces are like shoes...Although there are some basics for a fine pair of shoes (good quality leather, proper arch support, ect.)...one size definitely does not fit all. Of course, if you're a young player, your teacher may recommend a particular mouthpiece for you, but if you're an experienced player you probably have a good idea of what you're looking for in a mouthpiece (or a horn, for that matter). I believe it is, however, a good idea for other trumpet players to hear you on the mouthpieces (and horns) you like to get their opinions. Ultimately, though, the decision is yours. That said, I would never pass up the opportunity to test something new...you never know!
