Gin
I hope all will chime in here to help out.
I've had a copy of The Real Book, Vol. 1 the Bflat edition since around
1980. It used to be that you could only get one in certain "alternative"
music stores, and we used friends who were college students in Boston, or
other places to send us one. They were illegal to sell because the lead
sheets were all copywrited materials. If you search for The Real Book,
you'll see Amazon.com sells them now. There are bass cleff versions, Eflat
versions, C versions, etc. So they are in the main stream, and the original
transcriptions are now in the main stream and legal.
There is even a "Vocal" Real Book" in C with lyrics.
All other books are compilations by other publishers and are not "Real".

I think it's in the sixth printing now, and there are three volumes. I have
vol's one and two in Bflat, and haven't seen the third volume.
They ought to cost around $20 each, new.
Hope this helps.

Byron
