......while I'm on the soapbox, the other thing that I've
experienced in my lifetime is a proliferation of
information regarding trumpet pedagogy and jazz pedagogy.
I can remember when the first Aebersold LP came out, for
example. I remember being told that you can't teach jazz
and you can't learn jazz, you are either born with it or
you aren't.
I also remember the heavy pedagogical influence of the
Chicago Symphony Brass section during my formative years.
"Analysis breeds paralysis" was THE RULE. Growing up in
Indiana, between the Chicago school and Bill Adam's
influence, there were a lot of folks who just thought any
talk about embouchure was a complete waste of time and a
fool's journey.
My point is this, blaming your teachers is like blaming
your parents. Eventually it is up to us to figure it out
for ourselves and the blaming has to stop. I'm sure I was
a pain in the *** to some of my teachers, and a great
source of frustration, simply because they cared. At this
point, I am grateful that they shared their time and love
of music, and I'm glad I grew up when I did,
John
