I'm also going stricly on "hear-say" about Docs' version. I don't know what
years his recording would have been in use on CBS.

It would be interesting to hear Don's & Doc's versions side-by-side.

Any TPINers have MP3's they can point us to???

(I really don't like Wynton's version - no guts, no sound <let the flames
begin...>).

I have a little info on this I will post when I get home in a few hours.

I don't know how you could POSSIBLY like Doc's version more than Wynton's.
Doc is/was NOT a picc player. He was sent a P5-4 just for this session. I
love Doc to death, but a Baroque fanfare played on picc in a style similar
to the end of In The Mood is not something I enjoyed hearing every Sunday
morning. :)

I don't like Wynton's ornaments either, but it is certainly more palatable.

I'll tell the story of why they stopped using DS's version when I get home.

Dave and Mates,

I would be very interested to know the reasons and the process that
determined how, why and when to replace the Smithers version and then the
Severinson version in favor of the Marsalis version.  Perhaps those with
knowledge wouldn't want to say certain things publically.  I can understand
that.
