I thought about this several months ago when I excitedly purchased
McNabb's "Exquisite" CD, but decided against inciting the inevitable
TPIN flames... I listened several times to it, had others listen as
well, and frankly was not moved in a musical sense. His playing on
the Tchaikovsky and Bach is technically incredible, as many have
noted. BUT, he misses many of the expressive opportunities that
violinists insist are necessary to pull off these pieces. It is
obvious that the pieces were not intended for the trumpet. If the
musical elements were present that would not be so evident. As a
parallel listening exercise, I listened to Sergei Nakariakov(sp?),
and the effect is very different - the MUSICAL effect is there. So,
in a nutshell, I think it is great to do works originally intended
for other instruments - I love Bach, esp. the Cello Sonatas, for
example, but we still need to make sure the musical content is
there. Call it soul or whatever. Sergei seems to get it, but
Malcolm, despite his incredible technical virtuosity, doesn't do
justice to Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. BTW, I think the more
modern pieces on "Exquisite" are really terrific. Before all you
McNabb idolizers flame me, have a top violinist listen to his
Tchaikovsky and see how they react. Also, listen to Sergei - a true
artist, in my opinion. David Adams
