[TPIN] Doc's Abblasen

For some reason, I was contacted by one of the assistant producers of CBS
Sunday Morning right after they had re-recorded the fanfare with Doc. I
posted about this, so it should be in the archives somewhere.

The reason they had to replace the Smither's version is because they only
had it on the original VIDEO TAPE of the opening of the show. There was no
other recording at CBS of the fanfare. The video tape of the opening of the
show was simply worn out from being played so many times over the years.
They didn't know who the trumpet player was or where it came from. So, They
figured they would just record it with a famous trumpet player. If you are a
lay person and you think famous trumpet player you think Doc of course. If
not the most visible trumpet player ever, he's right up there.. Also he was
heavily associated with TV.

This guy had contacted me because he was so unhappy with the results and was
trying to find out more about the original and to see if it could be
located. Of course, I told him who did the original and what album it was on
and I volunteered to send him a CD off my original album or even send him
the album which is in good shape. He said he'd get back to me and never did.
When he told me they did the thing with Doc I told him that although Doc is
an icon, he isn't the person to record this thing and I strongly suggested
they get Phil Smith. I think by then the Doc thing was a done deal and there
wasn't anything he could do about since he wasn't the boss.

Frankly, Doc's version was laughable. I know he gave it his best, but he
should have declined the invitation to record this. He was way out of his
element and comfort zone.

I don't know how many years ago this was, but it wasn't on the air very long
relative to the original version. I have absolutely no information regarding
the re-re-recording of the fanfare by Wynton. Although it is considerably
better than Doc's, it doesn't hold a candle to Don Smithers' imo. Nice
sound, good time, but I don't like the ornaments... Feels sorta like Mariah
Carey singing TSSB. :-) I assusme they went with the "famous trumpet player"
angle again and in New York, Wynton is probably the most visible there is.
At least he owns a picc and can play it well. I wish they'd consult me
again, but that ain't gonna heppen. :-)
