To me, the SSB should never be used as a showcase for one's abilities or to
show off one's personality in any way. It isn't for publicity for the
performer.
It should be done in a way that 1. will help the people attending sing along
and 2. shows respect for the nation. That's it. Finito. :-)
I've done it many times as a player and conductor. Any time I had students
playing it, I made it clear that this is one of the most important
performances they would ever have.
The libertarians out there will disagree with this, but I'd like to see some
kind of congressional action that would dictate how it can be done in
public. Much like we have guidelines - maybe laws? - that dictate how the
flag is treated in certain situation. Highly unlikely, but I think it would
be appropriate.
