John's points are very well taken and I can't disagree with anything he said. There is a chance that if I'd heard this concert live, I would have come away on the other side of it. I would have written the same thing John did about my favorite players that I have heard live a lot. 

But..... Does this mean we can't feel passionately about Clifford's playing or Bird's? John, if I can get chill bumps listening to Clifford play a ballad from 1955 recorded on some guy's portable tape machine in a club and I get nothing from a youtube performance then can't there at least be a comparison made?

If a performance can reach you emotionlly through a lame sonic medium, doesn't it make it even more powerful?

I do agree it would be unfair to label anyone a poor player - particularly a jazz player - based on a bad live recording.  I didn't mean to say Marvin is not a great player. He is of course.
