TPIN:

When I "broke" into the club date biz I was advised by wise players NEVER to interpret leader hand signals, whether up, down, (shaken or stirred!) but, to use my ear to immediately "jump" into the "correct" key. I never had a problem doing so, and, frankly, enjoyed the challenge - and I ALWAYS worked.

Leaders were notorious for not knowing keys, handsigns or hand jive! Some were excellent musicians who knew their stuff (their tunes, keys and their audience!). Others were better suited as conductors - of train wrecks!

You simply "knew" the tune in any key and responded instantly, as opposed to relying or interpreting
what was wiggled at you, including the leadear's wife who was invariably booked on the date as the "maracas" player!

Ah, those were the daze!!!!!
