"quite a good crossover player" ??? Egads.
Sorry - I don't mean to sound like a prude, but... if Tony ever heard anyone
use that phrase in reference to him, he would split a gut. His philosophy
was: "You play the trumpet... not jazz trumpet, or orchestral trumpet, or
lead... you play the trumpet <period>."
To anyone who really knew him as a trumpet player and musician - saying he
was "quite a good crossover player" is a dramatic understatement.
Tony was *the* consumate musician. He had total mastery of the instrument,
and was completely musical in all respects with everything he played. I
played next to him for a number of years (74 to 80), splitting the lead/1st
trumpet books in a number of venues - theatre work, as well as 'legit' stuff -
everything from Gladys Knight, to Steve Lawrence & Edie Gourmet, to Michele
LeGrande, to Leonard Bernstein. It never mattered what he played - he always
made music.
I would put him on par with any trumpet player in the world: In particular,
with respect to 'legit' players, but he also played good jazz, and he had the
ability to play lead like Snooky Young - same kind of musicality and
intensity.
There was absolutely nothing that Tony Marchione could not play on the horn.
He was also an incredible teacher.
And yes, he could also solfege anthing... at site.
"Crossover" player... holy smokes. (Sorry)
