I don't think it's dying out -- it seems to me there are quite a few 
players today who go both ways (so to speak) quite capably. And for anyone 
trying to make a living today by playing the horn, it's more important than 
ever to be ready to play anything. Heck, even if you only play in a brass 
quintet, you can encounter music from centuries ago, contemporary 
classical, an Arban-style cornet solo, Dixieland, and swing -- all in the 
same set.
