One contemporary method that I *personally* find indispensible, is "Flexus" 
by Laurie Frink and John McNeil.  It's hardly a "classic" (perhaps geared 
more toward commercial/jazz players) but I find the balanced approach 
presented in the book to be very helpful.   When I can keep myself 'in the 
groove' using the book as perscribed for a daily routine, it seems to work 
well.
