Let's suppose I buy a cornet w/o a mouthpiece. How would I know which one to order?
Are you saying that if I buy an Olds or Bach, I should order a large shank? And if I buy a Schilke, Yamaha, or Besson, I should order a short shank?

In my experience, and as I have understood it from others, Olds, up to a certain time had their own (larger diameter) cornet receiver and mpcs --
-- From Olds Central -- http://rouses.net/trumpet/cornetmpc/cornetmpc.htm -- Prior to serial number 189,611, Olds cornets had a larger receiver than other standard cornets. In general, this applied to all models made by Olds earlier than September 1956. There are exceptions but they are relatively rare--probably custom orders or aftermarket modifications.
Mark Curry will make his cornet mpcs to fit perfectly those old Olds receivers -- everything else modern/American is probably standard.
The other question to ask is about the differences and applications of short-shank and standard-shank cornet pieces, and as I'm writing this, I'm wondering if that was the point of your question.

What's the relationship between the large/small shank size and the
cornet? Is it specific to the brand or is the small shank designed
for all shepherd's crook models?
