I recall reading that book also.

To my recollection, the trumpet call that is played every day is the Hejnal, and
it is always ended at the same premature spot because that is exactly the same
spot where the original trumpeter was when he was shot in the throat by an arrow.

In the book, this is used as a distress call because in more modern times (in
the book), the trumpeter is himself in distress. I don't recall exactly how, but
he is either being robbed or in danger of his life while in the tower. He
intentionally plays the entire Hejnal and everyone knows that he's in trouble so
they come to rescue him (successfully).
